Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injury is damage to the spinal cord that disrupts communication between the brain and body, affecting movement, sensation, and autonomic functions below the level of injury.

About the Condition

Spinal cord injury is damage to the spinal cord that disrupts communication between the brain and body, affecting movement, sensation, and autonomic functions below the level of injury.

Common Symptoms

  • Loss or reduction of movement (paralysis or weakness)
  • Altered or lost sensation
  • Muscle spasticity or spasms
  • Bladder, bowel, and autonomic dysfunction
  • Chronic pain and difficulty with balance or posture

Specialist Assessment

Comprehensive neurological and clinical evaluation (up to 7 days) including neurological examination, neuroimaging review (MRI), electrodiagnostic studies, and functional assessment to define the level and extent of injury and set individualized rehabilitation goals.

Rehabilitation Approaches

Intensive multidisciplinary rehabilitation combining physiotherapy and motor rehabilitation, occupational therapy, and functional training aimed at mobility, independence, and daily living. Non-invasive brain stimulation may be considered after evaluation.

CIREN Treatment Approaches

Spinal Cord Injury and Neurorehabilitation Clinic

1

Comprehensive Neurological Evaluation

Up to 7 days of diagnosis and evaluation including neurological examination, neuroimaging review, electrodiagnostic studies, and functional assessment to define the level and extent of injury and set individualized rehabilitation goals.

2

Intensive Multidisciplinary Rehabilitation

Personalized, multidisciplinary neuro-rehabilitation delivered in 4-week cycles under the direction of the neurologist, combining physiotherapy, motor rehabilitation, occupational therapy, and functional training.

3

Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) and Direct Current stimulation (tDCS) may be considered as supportive methods after specialist evaluation.

4

Functional and Occupational Therapy

Targeted training aimed at mobility, transfers, activities of daily living, and maximizing independence based on the individual's level of injury.

Limitations of Treatment

Spinal cord injury is often permanent. Rehabilitation aims to maximize remaining function, independence, and quality of life; it does not guarantee recovery of lost movement or sensation. Suitability is determined only after evaluation by the CIREN specialist team.

Medication-based treatment is separate from rehabilitation services. NeuralCIM® is included only where the specific indication is supported by reliable evidence and current authorization.
